In January 2024 we launched Buy Nothing New Month, a campaign introduced to the UK by Keep Britain Tidy.
The Buy Nothing New Month concept is part of a growing, global movement to reduce consumption and create a circular economy, sitting alongside Buy Nothing Day - celebrated internationally in November - and Australia's Buy Nothing New campaign in October. This campaign demonstrated how small changes in consumption can add up to big benefits for our planet and likewise, our pocket.
Refuse, Reduce and Reuse, all you need is some commitment and ingenuity to bring a little creativity into your life, to suit your needs and reduce what you buy.
January was the perfect time to reflect on how all those unnecessary purchases we make end up clogging landfills, crippling our environment and quite literally costing the earth. We asked people to pause their purchasing for a month - and to instead try borrowing, buying pre-loved or renting. The challenge was all about being mindful of what we typically waste and to bolster our bank balances to boot.
The campaign was all about moving beyond simply recycling to a more circular economy that wastes less and puts more value on the things we already have.
Thank you to all those who took part. We hope you found it valuable and enjoyed the experience and are excited to implement all the tips on how to reuse, repair and repurpose everyday items. You have certainly contributed to cutting down unnecessary waste in our environment and by participating in Buy Nothing New Month taken part in a growing, global movement to reduce consumption and create a circular economy.
